Knight Rider, a shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

Michael Knight, champions the cause of the innocent, the helpless, the powerless in a world of criminals who operate above the law.

A lone crusader in the dangerous world... the world of the Knight Rider.

Michael Long, a police officer, was shot in the face by the criminals he was investigating. Rescued from death by a terminally ill industrialist Wilton Knight, Michael was convinced to continue his fight against crime and injustice with a new face and a new identity. Michael Long was pronounced dead, and Michael Knight was born. As part of his new life, Michael agreed to become the primary operative for FLAG (Foundation for Law And Government) and was given a new car. A car unlike any other... the Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT); the fastest, safest, strongest, and smartest car in the world.

What is a "Knight Replica"?

A "Knight Replica" is a replica of one of the vehicles used in the Knight Rider series. Most replicas are of the famous KITT (or infamous KARR), for several good reasons. KITT was essentially the star of the original Knight Rider, and both KITT and KARR are based on a fairly inexpensive automobile, a modified 3rd generation Pontiac Firebird. The other vehicles of Knight Rider are more obscure and more expensive to reproduce. These are left to the professional exhibitors and wealthier [fan]atics.

The Vehicles of Knight Rider

KITT

K I T T
(Knight Industries Two Thousand)

In addition to being virtually indestructible, KITT possesses advanced artificial intelligence capable of accepting voice commands, as well as interacting with its operator and making decisions on its own. In fact, KITT's artificial intelligence is so advanced, that it has formed a kind of personality. This human characteristic has enabled KITT to gradually form a unique bond and partnership with Michael. Although his purpose is to fight criminals, KITT by nature is benevolent and compassionate. KITT is programmed in such a way that his top priority is to protect human life, and thus he does not utilize lethal force.

KARR

K A R R
(Knight Automated Roving Robot)

Before KITT was created, a prototype vehicle was developed by FLAG and was given the name Knight Automated Roving Robot, or KARR. Although very similar to KITT, the prototype lacked one important feature: the programming to protect human life. Once the car was activated, its primary directive was its own self survival at all costs. Upon realizing their mistake, the car was promptly deactivated. However, the technicians never dismantled the car, and instead stored it in the Knight Museum of Technology, where it sat quietly for a number of years. That is, until one day some thieves inadvertently activated it and it became a powerful adversary to Michael and KITT.

KIFT

K I F T
(Knight Industries Four Thousand)

In the year 2000, the director of the foundation decides to create a newer, more modern crime fighting machine, the Knight Industries Four Thousand (KIFT). Although created almost a decade after KITT, some of the same mistakes made in KARR's programming seem to have been made in KIFT. It does not have the personality and humanity of KITT, and so Michael Knight installs KITT's microprocessor into the new car before using it.

FLAG Mobile Command Center

A mobile base of operations used by the foundation. It contains an array of high-tech facilities, incredible computing power, access to all important government databases, and connectivity to almost any computer network in the world. In addition, it contains most of the resources necessary for upgrading, maintaining, and repairing KITT.

Goliath

Goliath

Created and driven by the evil Garth Knight (who was Wilton Knight's real son), this semi had the same indistructable "molecular bonded shell" as KITT, making it a formidible brute-force opponent. Fortunately, it did not have any real computerized intelligence, and it could be defeated using KITT's ability to analyze weakness and create battle tactics.

Kat, Dante, Domino, Beast, and Plato

Team Knight Rider was a new television series loosely based on the original Knight Rider. Instead of using one man and one machine, FLAG decided to develope a team of cars and drivers. The vehicles had their own special capabilities and very distinct personalities.

Why Create a Knight Replica?

Each person has their own reason for creating their replica. Many of us were children when the Knight Rider television series originally aired, and some of us were parents who watched the show with our children. Most of us wished they had KITT, a few of us wanted to wreck havoc in KARR. All of us wanted a car that was smart, fast, and fun to drive.

And who can argue against the powerful alure of being the lone crusader, Michael Knight?

Are Replicas of the Same Vehicles All Identical?

Because the vast majority of replicas are custom created by their owners, very few are alike. Many of the parts within the same replica have been made by completely different companies. Due to the large amount of personalized work found in replicas, several divisions of accuracy can be distinguished. The standard divisions are:

  • Facade Replica
  • Accurate Replica
  • Authentic Replica
  • Functional Replica

Some owners wish to simply create what is termed a "Facade Replica", which means that they reproduce the look of the outside of the vehicles and leave their stock (standard, out of the factory) interiors. These facade replicas have several advantages: they are cheaper, easier, and take much less time to create. However, they have limited show value, and spectators are often disappointed when they look inside and don't see digital gauges and the high-tech interior. Many of the facade replicas go on to the next level of authenticity when financing becomes available.

"Accurate Replicas" include both the exterior and interior conversion, meaning that they look very similar to the vehicle they represent. These cars never dissappoint the casual onlookers who get close enough to look inside. However, due to some imperfections, the attentive observers will be able to point out inconsistencies between the show car and these replicas. Some of these imperfections arise from small items, such as using look-alike interior consoles instead of ones molded from the original props, to larger items, such as not using the correct seats. For older replicas, these problems are due to no fault of the owner. Early in this industry's infancy there was a shortage of information and few companies produced truely authentic parts.

For those fanatical enthusiasts who absolutely must have the real KITT, companies are now beginning to produce extremely accurate reproduction parts, many of them molded off of the original props used in the show. When a replica is created using these parts and few deviations are made from the prop car, a replica is considered an "Authentic Replica". This does not imply any sort of certification by Universal Studios, but an exceptional reproduction at which even the experts marvel. Due to the many changes and inconsistencies within the show itself, most authentic replicas are representative of the vehicles in specific episodes or seasons.

Recently, a new breed of replica builders have come onto the scene. These owners are creating "Functional Replicas", which not only walk-the-walk, but actually listen-and-talk! These replicas set themselves apart from the rest by including speech recognition and generation, as well as some of the more fantastical accessories, such as smoke screen, oil slick, and auto cruise (meaning the vehicle drives, or seems to drive, by itself). Very few owners can afford (or would even want) to go to such lengths.
